What is a User?
Anyone who visits the site is considered a user, even you, reading this documentation, are considered a user. There are three default roles/groups of users when a Drupal site is created. User accounts provide an individual with an identity to the site, and when assigned roles (like administrator), allow those individuals to add or edit content, make changes, or any number of the activities described in this documentation.
Permissions let you control what users can do and see on your site. You can define a specific set of permissions for each role. See the Roles section to create a role. Any permissions granted to the Authenticated user role will be given to any user who is logged in to your site.
Roles are a named set of permissions that can be applied to a user account. Instead of deciding what permissions each user with access to your site needs (which can get tedious if many individuals use or visit a site), assigning them a role gives them all the permissions assigned to that role. Like with real life job functions, an administrator might have different needs and responsibilities than an editor, a site’s writing team, or someone doing research.
The UMD Terp Basic Page layout is the catch all layout for any other internal pages of a site (for example: about page, resources, projects, initiatives, etc).
UMD Terp Person layout provides space to share or promote important information for individuals in your school, department or unit, and is useful for faculty, or staff directories.
The UMD Terp Article layout is great for any number of publications one might find on a university site like official statements, news articles, blog posts, or general updates. Published articles on University sites should follow editorial guidelines on brand.umd.edu.
The UMD Terp Homepage layout has special features designed for a site’s home or landing page, but can be used on internal pages where projects or initiatives would benefit from a similar layout to a site’s homepage.
Hero Section
The Homepage layout includes a hero section at the top for titles, a text blurb, a “CTA” or “Call to Action” button, and a single image.
The UMD Terp Theme and the Drupal system itself come with various options to customize the look and feel of a site.
